Teacher Strikes Extend Vacation

Teacher strikes in Detroit and seven other Michigan districts stretched summer vacation for more than 210,000 students today, and thousands of other students were idled by walkouts in Pennsylvania and Washington state.
Classes would have started today in Detroit for 193,000 public school pupils. But nearly 7,000 members of the Detroit Federation of Teachers took a voice vote Monday night to reject the school board’s contract offer.
