American League Roundup : Guidry Gets Some Support at Last and Beats A’s, 4-1

Ron Guidry, with home-run support from Ron Kittle and Don Mattingly, won for the first time in more than a month Monday night at New York.

Kittle and Mattingly each hit two-run homers, powering the New York Yankees past the Oakland Athletics, 4-1, and helping Guidry win for the first time this season at Yankee Stadium.

Guidry (4-8), who scattered three singles and a double while striking out 10 in 7 innings, was 0-4 at New York this season despite a 2.38 earned-run average. The left-hander hadn’t won anywhere since beating the Chicago White Sox, 5-2, July 26 at Chicago.

Kittle’s 12th home run gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Afterward, Oakland Manager Tony LaRussa asked the umpires to confiscate Kittle’s bat. Mattingly’s homer in the eighth was his 24th.

Cleveland 7, Detroit 2--Rookie John Farrell, winning for the third time in four major league appearances since being called up Aug. 18, allowed six hits over eight-plus innings at Detroit in beating the Tigers for the second time in as many starts.

Farrell, who had a 5.83 ERA for Buffalo of the Triple-A American Assn., has a 0.96 ERA with the Indians. He walked three and struck out one.

Chicago 5, Kansas City 3--Carlton Fisk went 3 for 3, including a three-run homer, and knocked in all five runs for the White Sox at Chicago.

The homer, his 18th, was the 299th of his career and gave the White Sox a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Jose DeLeon (8-11) picked up his third straight win, scattering 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out a season-high 11 in seven-plus innings.

Baltimore 4, Seattle 3--Mike Hart hit a fifth-inning home run to break a 1-1 tie and touch off a three-run rally that carried the Orioles to the win at Baltimore.

Hart, who hit 20 home runs at Triple-A Rochester, is 5 for 23 since being recalled, and 3 of his hits have been home runs.

Winning pitcher Mike Griffin (3-5) had to leave the game in the sixth after a drive off the bat of Mike Kingery hit him on his right thigh.
