A back injury has forced Kenny Carr, veteran Portland Trail Blazers power forward, into retirement, he announced.
Carr, who was a first-round draft pick of the Lakers, played 10 National Basketball Assn. seasons, the last five with Portland. He was hampered by knee and back injuries in each of the last three years. Back problems limited Carr to 49 games last season, and the 6-7 forward averaged 10.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 29.4 minutes.
Carr said he suffered a herniated disk while lunging for a loose ball in a game against the Golden State Warriors Jan. 18.
“Rehabilitation made my back stronger, but I realized it would not stand up to NBA play,” Carr said.
Carr, 32, a graduate of North Carolina State, finishes sixth on the Portland career rebounding list with 2,549 rebounds, an 8.1 average in 316 games. He averaged 12.3 points.
