Kemp Drops N.H. Senator for Making Racial Slurs

Rep. Jack Kemp’s presidential campaign today dumped a state senator as an honorary county campaign chairman for refusing to apologize for racial slurs he made recently, a campaign spokesman said.

Paul Young, Kemp’s campaign director in the leadoff primary state, said he and the state campaign’s co-chairman, Judith Thayer, talked to Sen. John Chandler this morning.

“The Kemp campaign has relieved him of his position as honorary chairman of Merrimack County,” Thayer said in a statement. Chandler “refused to apologize for or repudiate his comments,” the statement said.

Kemp had demanded a public apology from Chandler, who worked as an unpaid volunteer for the Republican congressman from New York.

Chandler joked at various public events that black Democratic presidential hopeful Jesse Jackson had dropped out of the race when it was learned that his grandmother had posed for a centerfold for National Geographic magazine.

Chandler later said he “almost threw up” when he saw Jackson kiss the white daughter of a campaign official in New Hampshire.

“If we have too much race mixing, it’s going to wipe out the white race,” he said. “We’re far outnumbered by the blacks, browns and yellows.”
