The Growing Shortage of Nurses in Hospitals

Share

The story laid out clearly the issues involved in the growing shortage of trained medical personnel in nursing. The article addressed the decreased female numbers and how males, now 3% of nurses, are not filling the void. As a member of this minority, I feel there is a dynamic for this, i.e. not wanting to do what is perceived as “women’s work.”

Teaching went through this struggle and I hope nursing can round this corner as well. I believe a name change could do no harm, as it is not a title that inspires high school and college-age males. Yet, I have enjoyed the challenges and I know it would benefit from increased parity of male/female. There is nothing feminine about the demands.
