Golf Roundup : Sindelar Leaves Sluman and Field 8 Shots Behind

Joey Sindelar is all by himself, and Jeff Sluman has seen it before.

Sindelar shot a two-under-par 69 Saturday and built an eight-stroke lead over his fellow New Yorker after three rounds of the $400,000 B.C. Open golf tournament at Endicott, N.Y.

“Joey is kind of running away with it,” Sluman said. “He deserves to win. It’s the Joey Sindelar Story. It’s happened to me before.”

In 1980, Sindelar defeated Sluman to win the New York State Amateur at Vestal Hills Country Club, just a few miles from Endicott. Sluman and Sindelar will be paired in today’s final round.

Sindelar, a native of Horseheads, N.Y., had a 54-hole total of 16-under-par 197. Sluman, of Rochester, was in second place at 205. Tim Simpson and Tony Sills were nine shots back, while Roger Maltbie, Ken Green and Wayne Levi were 10 strokes off the pace.

Bruce Crampton shot a six-under-par 64 to take a seven-stroke lead in the second round of the Bank One Senior tournament at Lexington, Ky.

Crampton’s 36-hole total of 13-under-par 127 was the lowest on a par-70 course this year and the lowest in the history of the PGA Senior Tour. Crampton’s margin also tied him with Bob Charles for the biggest 36-hole lead this year on the tour.

Miller Barber was second at 134 after equaling his first-round score of 67. Harold Henning, Dale Douglass and Ben Smith were tied for third at 135.

Jim King, who was tied with Crampton after a first-round 63, bogeyed four holes on the front nine en route to a 74 and was at 137.

Mary Beth Zimmerman shot a five-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Nancy Lopez and two other golfers in the first round of the $200,000 LPGA Rail tournament at Springfield, Ill.

Lopez rolled in a 30-foot eagle putt on No. 6, her 15th hole of the day, to pull even with Missy McGeorge and Kathy Postlewait at 68.

Rosie Jones, Barb Bunkowsky and Becky Pearson were another stroke back.
