More than 300 regular and paramilitary Belgian police stormed a Brussels prison to put down a riot by 200 prisoners with tear gas, a paramilitary police spokesman said. He said the inmates launched the violent protest against prison accommodations they said were inferior to those prepared for 26 British soccer fans being extradited to Belgium for their part in a 1985 riot that killed 39 people in a Brussels stadium. The Belgian media, noting that the Britons will be able to watch color television and play games, have described their prison facilities as “four-star accommodation.” Two prisoners were injured and six policemen were reported hurt.
