Judge Robert H. Bork, whose nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court has fueled liberal-conservative debate, is unknown to most Americans, a recent Gallup poll indicated. In the survey of 510 people for Newsweek magazine, two-thirds were unable to identify Bork, but 52% said they agreed with the court’s 1973 ruling overturning laws against abortion. Bork has said that the Constitution guarantees no such right, yet 55% of those polled said if the court reversed that ruling they would oppose new restrictions. And 57% said they would be “less likely” to support a court nominee who might vote to uphold new limits on abortion.
