Contract talks resumed in Chicago, where teachers are threatening to strike, but a high-level meeting at the home of Detroit Mayor Coleman Young made no major progress toward resolving that city’s week-old teachers’ strike. In Chicago, a strike threatened for Tuesday, a day before classes are to start, would affect 430,000 students. At the mayor’s mansion in Detroit, the presidents of the Detroit Federation of Teachers and Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO conferred with school leaders, but union officers said little progress was made. The strike there affects 180,000 students.
