Chiefs Win Final Exhibition Game

Nick Lowery kicked a 46-yard field goal three minutes into overtime Sunday to give the Kansas City Chiefs a 13-10 exhibition victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

St. Louis sent the game into overtime when wide receiver Eric Swanson grabbed a 26-yard pass from quarterback Cliff Stoudt while falling into the left corner of the end zone with 29 seconds left in regulation play.

The touchdown was set up by another 26-yard pass play from Stoudt to Swanson and capped a four-play drive that moved the Cardinals 76 yards in just over a half-minute of playing time.

With just over a minute left in regulation, the Chiefs scored the first touchdown of the game on a one-yard plunge by running back Paul Palmer, a first-round draft choice from Temple.

The touchdown gave Kansas City a 10-3 lead.

The game was the 20th exhibition meeting between the Chiefs and Cardinals, and Kansas City holds a 13-6-1 advantage in the series.

It was the first time, however, that the so-called “Governor’s Cup” game has been staged outside Missouri.

A late scheduling change sent the game to a neutral site, and promoters in Memphis billed the game as a way for the city’s sports fans to show their desire for an NFL franchise. The game at the city’s newly enlarged Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium attracted a near-capacity crowd of 62,353 fans with 891 no-shows.

Kansas City opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal by Lowery in the first quarter. St. Louis followed in the same quarter with a 36-yarder by Jason Staurovsky.
