The City of Jerusalem has filed charges against two cinemas after a month of clashes between police and Orthodox Jews over the screening of films on the Sabbath, a city spokeswoman said. Spokeswoman Sevanah Meryn told Reuters the charges were filed because the cinemas “violated city bylaws which state that commercial institutions cannot open on Friday nights,” the start of the Jewish Sabbath. Meryn denied the city decided to take action against the cinemas because of pressure from Orthodox Jews who have protested in Jerusalem for four consecutive weeks against the screenings.
