A senior Israeli general was rebuked for criticizing the deaths of women and children in a weekend raid on the Ein el Hilwa Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon, Lebanon, that killed 49 people. The chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Dan Shomron, reprimanded his special adviser, Maj. Gen. Moshe Bar-Kochba, who was quoted by a leftist daily as saying that “we must make sure women and children are not hurt” and adding, “If we continue to bomb like this, we will destroy any chance for peace.” Lebanese newspapers reported that an unknown number of civilians died in the raid. However, Shomron told a parliamentary meeting that “there were no civilians killed in the raid, unless . . . one happened to be inside the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) base at the time,” witnesses said.
