Burundi’s new army ruler, Maj. Pierre Buyoya, announced the release of hundreds of political prisoners and promised to free hundreds more of those detained under deposed President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza. Buyoya, who seized power last week while Bagaza was attending a conference in Canada, said Bagaza had jailed an “unlimited number” of people, “without justification, without trial, without the application of justice.”
