Danish Prime Minister Poul Schlueter announced today that he has been asked to try to form a new government, only six hours after submitting his resignation to Queen Margrethe following a setback in Tuesday’s national elections.

Schlueter, 58, Denmark’s first Conservative prime minister this century, quit after his center-right coalition lost seven seats in Tuesday’s election. But he was later nominated by six party leaders commanding the votes of 90 deputies in the 179-member Parliament to try to construct a new coalition.
