Cerritos : Shorter Mayoral Term Fails

Share

Cerritos mayors will continue to enjoy the title for a full year. By a 3-2 vote, the City Council last week rejected Councilwoman Ann Joynt’s suggestion that the city’s year-long mayoral term be reduced to nine months.

The issue was first raised in May, when the council asked city staff members to find out how many California communities use 9-month terms. A survey turned up only two, Alhambra and Monterey Park. Joynt and Councilwoman Diana Needham both voted in favor of the change, with Joynt arguing that the shorter term would give more council members a chance to assume the ceremonial post.

Cerritos council members serve for four years, and every April they elect a new mayor.
