Connecticut Republican Newest House Member

Republican Christopher Shays of Connecticut was sworn into office Wednesday as the newest member of the House.

With his arrival, the political division of the 435-seat House became 258 Democrats and 177 Republicans. Shays, 41, a real estate broker, was elected on Aug. 18. He filled a vacancy caused by the May 7 death of Republican Rep. Stewart B. McKinney.
