A bill to abolish Los Angeles County’s main transportation agencies and replace them with a new super agency was approved today in the Senate.

The hard-fought measure, AB18 by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sepulveda) was approved 25 to 10 and returned to the Assembly, where its passage was also expected. Katz’s bill would abolish the Southern California Rapid Transit District and the Los Angeles Transportation Commission. In their place, it would set up a 12-member panel called the Metropolitan Transit Authority, responsible for managing Los Angeles-area rail, bus and highway planning.
