Also jazzy: Director Susan Robeson, granddaughter of Paul Robeson, has joined with co-producer Lucille Ostrow to film a feature-length documentary on the life of legendary saxophonist Benny Carter. Cinematographer Haskell Wexler is behind the camera.
Robeson, who has directed documentaries on Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Eckstine, and her crew have just returned from shooting footage of Carter, 80, and his 10-piece orchestra performing in Japan. More shooting is planned, but no release date has been set.
