Jerusalem police used tear gas on ultra-Orthodox Jews to break up protests during a fourth straight weekend of demonstrations against the showing of movies on the Jewish Sabbath. In the religious enclave of Mea Shearim, about 150 men and boys dressed in the black garb of 17th-Century Eastern Europe hissed “Sabbath” at passing cars while others, trying to halt traffic on a busy road nearby, clashed with helmeted police. On Friday, a government spokesman said that Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir had brokered a three-week truce in the Sabbath feud, starting next Saturday. The spokesman said that Mayor Teddy Kollek agreed to halt all Sabbath film screenings until after Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day, which falls this year on Oct. 3.
