Big Eight Roundup : Holieway Runs for 170 Yards, 4 Touchdowns as Oklahoma Wins, 28-0

Two records were established in top-ranked Oklahoma’s 28-0 victory over North Carolina at Norman, Okla., Saturday. One pleased Sooner Coach Barry Switzer, the other didn’t.

Quarterback Jamelle Holieway raced for 170 yards and 4 touchdowns in the victory. Both were personal highs for the junior quarterback from Banning High in Wilmington.

Switzer praised Holieway’s performance but he was not happy about the Sooners’ school-record 19 penalties for losses of 125 yards.

“That’s way too many,” he said. “We had all kinds of penalties--face mask, procedure, holding--so there is not one thing to work on. It’s part of football, but our penalties are excessive.”

The Tar Heels held the Sooners to a scoreless tie in the first quarter, but Holieway directed Oklahoma’s wishbone offense to a 21-point outburst in the second quarter.

“We wore them down,” Switzer said. “I think they got tired, especially in the second quarter. North Carolina is a good football team, but we played well in the second quarter.”

North Carolina Coach Dick Crum was asked if Oklahoma, which improved to 2-0, looked like a No. 1 team.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t played many No. 1 teams. They certainly executed their offense very well. They have a good arsenal and a lot of variables.”

Holieway scored on runs of 3, 4 and 1 yards before the half and tacked on another 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter as Oklahoma went ahead, 28-0. He averaged almost 7 yards in 25 carries.

Mark Maye’s passing kept the ball out of the Sooners’ hands for much of the first half. North Carolina, which fell to 1-1, missed a chance to take the lead in the first quarter when a pass off a fake field-goal attempt from Eric Wetherington to kicker Kenny Miller went astray.

Maye connected on four passes in a North Carolina drive that reached the Oklahoma four in the third quarter, but the scoring opportunity was killed when Maye was sacked by defensive end Darrell Reed on a fourth-and-five play.

Missouri 23, Baylor 18--Safety Erik McMillan scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 13-yard interception return to lead the Tigers to a season-opening victory at Columbia, Mo.

Tulane 25, Iowa St. 12--At New Orleans, Terrance Jones connected with Marc Zeno on nine passes, including a 16-yard touchdown completion and a 40-yard scoring pass play as Tulane evened its season at 1-1 and the Cyclones opened their season with a loss.
