Reading Sharon Dirlam’s story of her ancestors who migrated to the United States from Dirlammen, Germany, brought some very pleasant and some unpleasant memories to me.

While stationed in the U.S. Army in Germany, I tried to locate the grave site of my former neighbor who was killed during the Battle of the Bulge.

After leaving Frankfurt, Germany, my buddy and I traveled north through the town of Schlitz and to Amsterdam, Holland, where I searched for relatives of my grandparents who had also migrated to the United States.

I wish to thank her for bringing these memories back to me after all these years.
