U.S. industrialist Armand Hammer and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping met for an hour behind closed doors at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. Details of their talk were not disclosed. Hammer’s Occidental Petroleum has invested heavily in China’s coal and oil industries, and the official New China News Agency said Deng told Hammer that he is a courageous man because “some foreign entrepreneurs still lack the courage to cooperate with China in undertaking big projects.” Hammer, 89, arrived in Beijing last week to mark the opening of the $650-million Antaibo coal mine, jointly owned by China and Occidental.
