Israeli Parliament Rejects Probe of ’82 Invasion of Lebanon
Israel’s Parliament today rejected a motion to launch an inquiry into the 1982 invasion of Lebanon despite a member’s claim that he had evidence that then-Defense Minister Ariel Sharon acted without authority in sending troops all the way to Beirut.
Ron Cohen, a member of the leftist Citizens Rights Party, told lawmakers a “secret” Israel Defense Forces’ investigation into the Lebanon war concluded that Sharon ignored a Cabinet decision to limit the invasion to 24 miles.
Parliament voted 27 to 13 to reject Cohen’s motion to establish a state commission of inquiry into the handling of the war.
