Striking teachers in Constantine, Mich., and Lancaster County, Pa., reached tentative contract agreements, clearing the way for classes to resume, while strikes began in yet another Michigan school district and in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 60,000 teachers in Michigan, Ohio, Washington, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts remained off their jobs as part of 19 separate disputes affecting more than 700,000 students. The two largest walkouts--in Chicago and Detroit--continued.
