Two newspaper reporters from Taiwan toured sites in Beijing and planned to interview “ordinary people” in China on an unprecedented assignment in defiance of their government. Hsu Lu, 30, and Lee Yung-teh, 33, of the Independence Evening Post, are the first Taiwan journalists to make a public reporting trip to China since the Communist takeover in 1949. Taiwan bans such trips, but Lee said they are needed to tell Taiwan residents about life on the mainland so they can make “mental preparations” for visits. Hsu said the two reporters also plan to visit Shanghai and Canton.
