William Dean Singleton, who earlier this week agreed to buy the Denver Post from Times Mirror, said Wednesday that James E. Barnhill will become publisher when he takes ownership of the Post about Dec. 1.

Barnhill, publisher of Singleton’s Yakima, Wash., Herald-Republic, will succeed Richard T. Schlosberg III, who turned down an offer to stay with Singleton and chose instead to remain with Times Mirror, publisher of the Los Angeles Times and seven other newspapers.

Times Mirror Chairman Robert F. Erburu said Schlosberg, publisher of the Post since 1983, will hold an as yet undetermined senior executive post in Times Mirror’s newspaper operation.

Schlosberg, 43, spent most of his career with Harte-Hanks Communications, becoming president of its newspaper operations and a corporate senior vice president in 1980. Barnhill, 56, is also a Harte-Hanks veteran. In 1980, he became publisher of the 40,000 circulation Yakima paper, which Singleton purchased last year.

In the $95-million sale of the Post, one of Singleton’s partners, Richmond, Va.-based Media General, will reportedly pay $25 million in cash immediately. Times Mirror will carry the remaining $70 million in notes. For now, Singleton will pay no cash of his own.

A week ago, Singleton announced plans to buy the Houston Post for $150 million in cash.
