The talks between Secretary of State George P. Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze were extended today, an apparent sign of progress toward opening the way for an arms control agreement.

The two were scheduled to end their talks around noon today but instead sent out for sandwiches and decided to continue through the afternoon and possibly through the evening. State Department spokesman Charles Redman said the two negotiators said there would be no public statements until Friday.
