Finnish Bishop Praises Billy Graham Crusade
From Times staff and wire service reports
Finnish Lutheran Bishop Samuel Lehtonen said a six-day crusade by evangelist Billy Graham, which ended Aug. 31, was “the greatest religious event in the history of Finland.”
Lutheranism is the state church of Finland, which is 90% Lutheran. Attendance averaged 30,500 at each of the six services, and an average 1,575 at each service made commitments to Christ.
Lehtonen, bishop of Helsinki, said it will take months to estimate the full impact, but “I am rejoicing and wonderfully surprised at what happened.”
