UC Renews Pacts on Nuclear Arms Research for U.S.
In a 17-3 vote, the University of California Board of Regents on Friday renewed its controversial contracts to run two nuclear weapons research laboratories for the federal government.
Voting against new five-year contracts to manage the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Scientific Laboratory were regents Stanley Sheinbaum of Los Angeles, Yori Wada of San Francisco and Jacquelyn Ross, a UC Davis senior who is the student representative on the board. Joseph Moore of San Francisco abstained.
Lt. Gov. Leo T. McCarthy, who is a regent, was traveling out of state but sent a letter of protest.
