Golf Roundup : Larry Ziegler’s 132 Best of Finishers

Larry Ziegler shot a second-round 68 Friday to take the lead at the rain-delayed $500,000 Greater Milwaukee Open, but Robert Wrenn led a crowd of challengers threatening to overtake him when play was suspended by darkness.

Ziegler began the day by finishing his rain-delayed first round in eight-under-par 64, then added a 68 for a 36-hole score of 132 and a four-stroke lead over those who completed their second round.

When play was suspended, Wrenn had just completed a string of four birdies to go to 12 under par with five holes to play. Nick Price was at 10 under with six holes left.

Two-time U.S. Open winner Andy North and Dan Pohl were at eight under--North with seven holes left and Pohl with six to go.

First-round leader Tommy Nakajima of Japan, who tied a tournament record with a 10-under 62 Thursday, was three over par for 16 holes and had dropped to seven-under for the tournament.

Among the players who completed the second round were defending champion Corey Pavin, who had a 67, and Mark Calcavecchia and George Burns, who both had 68s. The three shared second place at 136.

Play was scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. this morning on the par-72, 7,030-yard Tuckaway Country Club course. About half the field still had to complete the second round. The field will then be reduced to the top 70 and ties for the final two rounds.

Orville Moody and Gary Player each shot six-under-par 66s to share the first-round lead in the $325,000 Crestar senior tournament at Richmond, Va.

They are one stroke ahead of Gene Littler and Larry Mowry and have a two-shot advantage over a group of four golfers, including defending tournament champion Chi Chi Rodriguez.

Jan Stephenson birdied the 18th hole to gain a tie with Missie Berteotti for the lead after 36 holes of the $225,000 Safeco tournament at Kent, Wash.

Stephenson finished with a two-under-par 70 to go with her first-round 68, and Berteotti shot her second straight 69. Shirley Furlong was two strokes back at 140, with Cindy Hill and Colleen Walker at 141.

Ian Woosnam of Wales shot an eight-under-par 64 and has a one-stroke lead after the second round of the $480,000 Lancome Trophy tournament with a 36-hole total of 129, 15 under par at St. Mom La Breteche, France.

Barry Lane of England set a course record, shooting a 63 for a 130 total.
