Charles E. Hugel, president and CEO of Combustion Engineering Inc., will takeover as “non-executive” chairman of RJR Nabisco Inc., Atlanta, in October.

Hugel, 59, “will continue his principal responsibilities” as head of Combustion Engineering, a Stamford, Conn.-based supplier of equipment and technology to the power and process industries, said a statement issued by RJR Nabisco.

Hugel replaces J. Paul Sticht, who turns 70 Oct. 3. Sticht will remain a director until he retires in April.

Kurt Feuerman, an analyst with Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc., New York, said he knew of no other case in which an individual has served as chief executive of one major corporation and chairman of another, unrelated, company.
