Judiciary Committee Hearings on Judge Robert Bork

Share

Our President has told us that he holds Bork in high esteem as a jurist and as a person. In this regard, it would be well for our Senate to follow the counsel of Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-N.C.) in another period of history.

Thurmond successfully filibustered President Johnson’s nomination of former Justice Abe Fortas to be chief justice because of his “liberal” ideology, saying:

“To contend that we must merely satisfy ourselves that Justice Fortas is a good lawyer and a man of good character is to hold a very narrow view of the role of the Senate, a view which neither the Constitution itself nor history and precedent have prescribed.”

Thurmond presently sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee which is now conducting hearings on the appointment of Bork.
