Driver in ’86 Shooting Jailed for 1 Year

The getaway driver in a 1986 shooting in which two members of a Crenshaw High School state championship basketball team were wounded was sentenced to one year in County Jail. Darnell Washington, 22, of Los Angeles was also placed on three years’ probation and ordered by Superior Court Judge William Pounders to make restitution. Washington pleaded guilty last month to three counts of attempted murder, Deputy Dist. Atty. Paula Palmor said. Authorities said three carloads of apparent gang members drove by a hamburger stand in the 4400 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard on July 27, 1986, and opened fire. Wounded were team members Troy Batiste and Marcus Williams, both 18, and Mark Day, 20, then a senior at Crenshaw. Washington was a driver of one of the cars. One of the shooters, Maurice McIntosh, 17, previously pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder and was turned over to the California Youth Authority.
