Visiting New York Gov. Mario Cuomo said in Moscow that he favors a conference on human rights abuses in both the Soviet Union and the United States. When asked by reporters after talks with senior Soviet officials if he thought there are human rights abuses in the United States, Cuomo replied, “Why don’t you have a conference and find out?” Cuomo also met with human rights activist Andrei D. Sakharov and members of a dissident organization called the Glasnost Press Club. He presented Vitaly I. Vorotnikov, a member of the ruling Politburo, a letter asking for a review of 86 cases involving, among other issues, the matter of individuals denied permission to emigrate from the Soviet Union.
