Newspaper Asks Inquiry Into Cycling Death of Its Publisher
The Providence Journal Co. has asked for an investigation into the death of Michael P. Metcalf, the company’s chief executive officer and publisher of the Providence Journal-Bulletin.
The company on Monday asked the Bristol County, Mass., district attorney’s office to look into the “unusual nature” of the apparent bicycle accident that led to Metcalf’s death, the newspaper reported today.
Metcalf, 54, died Sunday night, a week after he suffered serious head injuries in a freak bicycle accident near his Westport, Mass., summer home. Authorities have no witnesses to the incident but have said they do not believe foul play was involved.
An autopsy completed late Monday night showed Metcalf died of a fractured skull and complications of pneumonia, contracted while in the hospital, medical examiner David Shulman said.
Metcalf, his 10-speed bike lying virtually undamaged beside him, was found unconscious and bleeding by the side of the road on a smooth stretch of pavement at the crest of a long, gradual slope. He never regained consciousness.
