China Reinstates Editor Suspended in Crackdown
China has reinstated the editor-in-chief of a Chinese magazine who was suspended for publishing a controversial story about Tibet, the overseas edition of the People’s Daily reported today.
Liu Xinwu, editor-in-chief of People’s Literature and a well known author, was suspended in February during a crackdown on liberal expression that followed the resignation of Communist Party Secretary Hu Yaobang in January.
The story that caused the trouble, entitled “Show the Coating of Your Tongue or Nothingness,” dealt partly with alleged incest among peasants in Tibet.
The authorities branded the article as disgusting and an insult to the Tibetan people.
The People’s Daily said the secretariat of the Writers’ Assn. had decided to reinstate him after he made a self-criticism for his action.
The newspaper said Liu would leave China on Wednesday for a six-week tour of the United States at the invitation of an overseas Chinese newspaper and Columbia and New York State universities.
Liu is to lecture about developments in Chinese literature over the last 10 years during visits to New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, the paper said.
