Share

The House voted 348 to 68 to make a $767-million down payment on development of a U.S. space station. The money was part of the $9.5 billion for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration included in a $57.9-billion 1988 appropriations bill for NASA, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and several other independent agencies. The bill now goes to the Senate. The National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, recently reported that the total cost to develop and deploy the eight-person space station will range from $25 billion to $29.9 billion in 1988 dollars.
