The National Conference of Catholic Bishops said it and its action arm, the U.S. Catholic Conference, asked the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling requiring it to open files in an abortion-related challenge to the church’s tax-exempt status. At issue is a case that began more than six years ago, when the Abortion Rights Mobilization and others filed suit to compel the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service to revoke the conferences’ tax exempt status because of what ARM said was their partisan political campaign activity against the 1973 Supreme Court decision outlawing abortion.
