President Reagan today nominated former Michigan Rep. Mark Siljander, defeated in a controversial 1986 campaign, to be the alternate representative on the U.S. delegation to the U.N. General Assembly.

After losing his seat in a 1986 GOP primary contest to Fred Upton, Siljander conceded his defeat primarily was due to a tape he sent to ministers throughout his district, asking them to “break the back of Satan” by backing his reelection bid.
