The Rev. Lloyd Ogilvie, senior pastor of the 4,500-member Hollywood Presbyterian Church, is recuperating this month from an operation on his left leg, which he damaged severely in a fall.

Ogilvie, 57, was hiking alone by an ocean inlet near Arisaig innorthern Scotland on Aug. 15, near the end of his study leave, when he slipped and fell on some rocks. “My left leg was caught at first between two rocks,” he explained. “It turned out that the top of my tibia was crushed in seven pieces. I had to drag myself on my buttocks for 2 hours and 45 minutes before someone came along.”

He underwent extensive surgical repair Aug. 26 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is undergoing therapy at home.

“We don’t expect him back until November. He has to stay off his feet right now,” said Jack Loo, administrator for the Hollywood congregation.

Ogilvie was expected to return to the pulpit Sept. 13, but on that date the congregation was instead informed of the accident. The pastor also has a radio and television program, “Let God Love You,” which is running some shows taped ahead of time.

“I had just finished making editing changes on my book, “Twelve Steps to Living Without Fear,” he said in a telephone interview. “I had to use all 12 steps when I was trying to get help.”
