The United States has sent 2,000 gas masks to Chad because Libya may be using chemical weapons against Chadian forces, the State Department said on Friday.

Spokesman Phyllis Oakley said the United States took seriously Chadian charges that Libya has used chemical weapons in the border war with its southern neighbor.

“Accordingly, we have responded to Chad’s defensive needs by providing the 2,000 gas masks,” she said.

Chad and Libya fought several battles in August in the Aozou border strip, which they both claim. After inconclusive peace talks in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on Wednesday, an Organization of African Unity committee on the conflict urged both sides to maintain a cease-fire that began Sept. 11.
