A group of homeless people, many of them uprooted from a closed urban campground in Los Angeles, continued a protest trek into affluent communities by marching from a Beverly Hills park, where they had spent Friday night, to an oceanside park in Santa Monica. The City of Los Angeles closed its 12-acre urban campground for the homeless Friday morning after 3 1/2 months of operation. The march is intended to make those in “influential and affluential” areas aware of the plight of the homeless, said its leader, homeless activist Ted Hayes. When the marchers awoke Saturday morning in Beverly Hills they were greeted by a resident bearing croissants. During the afternoon they headed for Palisades Park in Santa Monica, where they planned to spend the night, but they received a chilly reception from a half-dozen transients who are regulars in the park and viewed the march as a publicity stunt. An argument ensued, but no one was injured. Santa Monica police said they did not anticipate any further problems.
