Thai troops rounded up about 2,000 hill tribesmen in 13 northern villages and sent them back to Burma, according to Khachadpai Buruspatana, deputy director general of the National Security Council. Khachadpai, in a newspaper interview, said that those expelled “were destroying our forests” and that “some were drug traffickers.” He also denied violence was used, but an international aid worker said houses were burned and livestock killed to prevent the villagers’ return. The government announced in 1976 that no further immigration would be allowed.
