The Pittsburgh Pirates, switching their top minor league farm club for the third time in three seasons, announced Wednesday they have signed a working agreement for 1988 with Buffalo of the Triple-A American Association.

Pirates General Manager Syd Thrift cited Buffalo’s location to Pittsburgh and the city’s new 19,500-seat stadium as the primary reasons for the switch. The Pirates had been affiliated with Pacific Coast League teams since 1979: Vancouver this season, Hawaii from 1983 through 1986 and Portland from 1979 through 1982.

The Bisons will play in $59-million Pilot Field, which is currently under construction in downtown Buffalo.
