Orange County College Roundup : Titan Men Win Fifth Soccer Match in a Row

Cal State Fullerton won its fifth consecutive men’s soccer game with a 3-0 victory over Texas Christian Saturday at Fort Worth, Tex.

The Titans (5-2) took a 1-0 first-half lead on an unassisted goal by freshman Eamon Kavanagh and got second-half goals from senior Ben Macaluso, assisted by junior Joe Baeskens, and senior Gary McKimmey, assisted by freshman Steve Crevoiserat.

Freshman Bryan Fisher, who played 80 minutes, and freshman Jay Nettekoven played in goal for Fullerton, which used seven freshman at one time during the game. The Titans outshot TCU, 12-4.

“When we had possession, we retained the ball for long periods of time without giving it up with silly mistakes,” Titan Coach Al Mistri said. “We haven’t played well on the road until today, but our intensity was very high.”

In cross-country:

Sophomore Buffy Rabbitt and senior Jill Harrington led UC Irvine to the women’s cross-country team title of the Aztec Invitational at San Diego’s Balboa Park.

Rabbitt, a Newport Beach native, finishing fourth in 17:30 seconds over the 5,000-meter course, and Harrington, the defending PCAA champion, was fifth in 17:32. Irvine won the team title with 76 points. Northern Arizona was second with 86 points and Arizona was third with 113.

Irvine’s men’s team finished second with 73 points to San Diego State’s 66. Senior Richard Graves led the Anteaters with a fourth-best 10,000 meters time of 30:35 seconds.

In women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine def. San Diego State, 8-15, 8-15, 17-15, 15-6, 15-12--The Anteaters trailed, 12-8, in the final game before coming back and winning on Kris Roberts’ kill. Roberts finished with 17 kills and 10 blocks, and Ann Warmus had 11 kills and 58 assists, three short of the school record. Ali Wood added 15 kills, and Carolyn Janisch and Cynthia Watson 11 each.

UCI is 1-2 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., 5-4 overall. SDSU is 1-3, 4-7.

Cal State Fullerton def. Fresno State, 5-15, 15-13, 15-7, 6-15, 15-7-- Outside hitter Susan Herman set a school record with 33 kills in the Titans’ Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory in Titan Gym. Setter Susan Halsted set another school record with 72 assists for Fullerton (1-4, 8-8). Fresno State is 0-3, 4-7.

Southern California College def. Azusa Pacific, 15-5, 15-9, 15-9--Heidi Hafner had six kills and Leigh Ann Vanderheyden had five kills and four solo blocks to lift the Vanguards over Azusa Pacific in the Golden State Athletic Conference match. Colleen Cassidy had in four kills and 10 digs for the Vanguards. The Vanguards raised their record to 1-2, 5-8, and Azusa Pacific fell to 1-1, 6-11.
