East Roundup : Thomas Gains 164 Yards, Scores Twice to Lead Penn State

Blair Thomas rushed for a career-high 164 yards in 30 carries and scored twice as 15th-ranked Penn State, which had lost a 17-0 lead, regained control in the fourth quarter and beat Boston College, 27-17, Saturday night at Foxboro, Mass.

The Nittany Lions (3-1) took the lead for good, 20-17, on Eric Etze’s second field goal, a 46-yarder, 59 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Boston College (2-2) had forced Penn State to punt on that series, but nose guard Dave Nugent was penalized for running into punter Chris Clauss. The five-yard penalty moved the Nittany Lions close enough for Etze to try a field goal.

Penn State padded its lead on John Greene’s four-yard run with 6:58 left in the game.

Thomas had his previous career high of 154 yards last Saturday in a 41-0 win over Cincinnati.

Penn State, which held Cincinnati to 114 yards a week before, sacked Eagle Mike Power 10 times for 78 yards.

Pitt 6, West Virginia 3--Pittsburgh linebacker Ezekial Gadson recovered a fumble by West Virginia quarterback Major Harris with 4:50 left in the game, and Jeff Van Horne kicked a 40-yard field goal four plays later to lift the Panthers over the Mountaineers at Morgantown, Va.

Pitt (3-1) secured the win when Gadson sacked Harris on fourth and seven with 1:58 left. West Virginia is now 1-3.

Holy Cross 63, Lehigh 6--Jeff Wiley set school records with 414 yards passing and 7 touchdowns to lead the Crusaders in a Colonial League game at Bethlehem, Pa.

Wiley completed 21 of 29 passes in the first half for 313 yards and 6 touchdowns as Holy Cross, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, built a 42-6 lead. Wiley finished with 27 completions, tying a Holy Cross record.

Wiley threw four touchdown passes during the second quarter, including an 18-yarder to senior tailback Gordon Lockbaum, Holy Cross’ two-way player who rushed 6 times for 31 yards and another touchdown.

Lehigh is 2-1 overall, 1-1 in league.

Lafayette 38, Columbia 7--Frank Baur passed for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Lafayette at Easton, Pa., as the Lions lost for the 33rd straight time, one short of Northwestern’s major-college record.

Columbia (0-2) has not won since Oct. 15, 1983, a 21-18 victory over Yale.

Princeton 42, Davidson 6--The Garrett brothers--Jason, Judd and John--led the Tigers at Charlotte, N.C. Jason Garrett passed for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns, Judd Garrett rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown and John Garrett caught 4 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers improved to 2-0. The Wildcats, losers of 15 straight, fell to 0-4.

Yale 30, Connecticut 27--Kelly Ryan, who completed 25 of 36 passes for 274 yards, threw 4 touchdown passes, including an 11-yarder to Tom Szuba with 18 seconds left, to help the Bulldogs rally from 10 points down in the final five minutes at New Haven, Conn. Yale is 1-1, Connecticut 1-2.

Army 48, The Citadel 6--Quarterback Tory Crawford ran for one touchdown and passed for two others as the Cadets (2-1) romped at West Point, N.Y. Crawford, who had 97 yards rushing, threw touchdown passes of 50 and 37 yards to Sean Jordan.

Colgate 27, Cornell 3--Damon Phelan hooked up with Rick Evans on a 55-yard touchdown pass play and teamed with Buddy Brown on an 83-yard scoring play as the Red Raiders (3-1) erupted offensively after a scoreless first half to defeat the Big Red (1-1) at Ithaca, N.Y.

Rutgers 19, Kentucky 18--Brian Cobb returned a kickoff 94 yards to set up a 4-yard third-quarter scoring run by Dwight Giles as Rutgers (2-1) edged Kentucky (2-1) at East Rutherford, N.J.

North Carolina 45, Navy 14--The Tar Heels had 467 yards in total offense and held the Midshipmen to 206 in winning at Annapolis, Md. Eric Starr rushed for 127 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Tar Heels (3-1). Navy (0-3) has lost 10 straight.

Brown 17, Rhode Island 15--At Providence, R.I., Chris Poirier scored on a five-yard run for Rhode Island with 47 seconds left, but Brown (2-0) stopped a two-point conversion attempt as the Ivy League Bruins held on for an intrastate victory over the Rams (1-3) of the Yankee Conference.

Harvard 27, Northeastern 24--At Cambridge, Mass., Bruce Jacob kicked a 32-yard field goal and Tom Yohe threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Brian Barringer in the fourth quarter to lead the Crimson (2-0) over the Huskies (2-1).

New Hampshire 41, Dartmouth 3--Bob Jean completed 19 of 26 passes for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Wildcats over the cross-state rival Big Green at Durham, N.H.

Bucknell 32, Penn 24--Quarterback Jim Given ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third to pace Bucknell (2-1) over the Quakers (0-2) at Lewisburg, Pa.
