The annual Courage Awards--presented by local chapters of the National Organization for Women to honor journalists “who have brought feminist ideas before the public eye”--became a platform for a NOW report on inequalities in the broadcast industry. A “white paper” prepared for release during the annual dinner Sunday reported that among television reporters, recent hiring of women and men are even in numbers, but women earn an average of $10,000 less than their male counterparts. Among those broadcasters winning Courage Awards Sunday were Linda Ellerbee, Marlene Sanders of PBS, Valerie Coleman of KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, ABC’s Kathleen Sullivan and PBS’ Charlayne Hunter-Gault. Bill Press, political commentator for KABC-TV here, was the only male to win a Courage Award.
