Fujitsu America, a unit of Japan’s largest computer maker, is adding a second manufacturing plant to its U.S. operations in Hillsboro, Ore. The company said the $30-million, 177,000-square-foot facility is scheduled for completion in March, 1989, and will employ 500 workers to assemble a variety of computer products.

Masaki Ogi, president of Fujitsu America, said the second plant is part of the company’s plan to feed locally produced products into the North American market. “As part of our vision to become a fully integrated U.S.-based operating company with increased onshore manufacturing, we expect to achieve a 50% local content ratio by the end of 1988 and to increase exports of locally manufactured products before the end of the decade,” he said.

Fujitsu began operation of its first Hillsboro plant in 1986.
