Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, a Democratic presidential candidate, said today he would be “very angry” if it were proven his campaign provided journalists with a videotape that led to the collapse of rival Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Del.).

“Anyone who knows me knows how strongly I feel about negative campaigning,” Dukakis told a news conference, adding that he personally interviews all paid campaign staff to impress them with that fact.

But Dukakis could not provide a blanket denial to the reports published in Time magazine that “informed sources” blame Dukakis aides for providing the tape comparing Biden’s speech with one by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock.

Dukakis said there is a “strong possibility” that a guilty employee would be fired.
