Local News in Brief : Asbestos Delays Project

A $79-million expansion of the Beverly Hills Civic Center has been delayed after officials discovered asbestos in the city library.

Renovation of the library will be put off until the end of November while workers remove asbestos from air ducts in the building, said Rick Putnam, director of public services for the city. The asbestos never posed a threat to patrons of the library but could be dangerous to workers renovating the facility, he said.

The new civic center is 50% complete, with full completion expected in two years, Putnam said.
